Fall Family Fun, Food & Fitness Events (FFFF) - Application Deadline Extended

Sub-grant funding of $250 is available for 60 schools and childcare centers to host a school or childcare sponsored health fair and/or fitness-themed family night.  This program includes an event planning guide that provides instructions for planning and promoting a health-centered, family-friendly, school or childcare sponsored event and provides guidance for both nutrition and fitness activities. Events must be hosted between September to December 2014 by grantee schools and childcare centers.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for Secondary Schools (FFVP-SS) - Fall Funding

Applications are now available for sub-grant funding ($4/student) to implement the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for Secondary Schools this fall (Grades 6-12).  Schools applying for this program will commit to serving a total of eight tastings (four fruits and four vegetables) from a predetermined list (see below).   Participating schools must administer a short pre and post impact assessment survey to participating students.  The program can be implemented between September and December over four consecutive weeks.

Power Panther Pals (PPP)

This 8-week health education curriculum for elementary school combines classroom lessons, physical activity, and cooking/tasting activities to teach students the benefits of making healthy choices. Two levels of the program are available: PPP-Primary for grades K-2 and PPP-Intermediate for grades 3-5. Sub-grant funding of $5/student is available for up to 15,000 students across the state to help cover the costs of cooking/tasting activities that are part of the curriculum. Power Up

This 8-week health education curriculum for middle schools combines classroom lessons, physical activity, and cooking/tasting activities to teach students the benefits of making healthy choices. Sub-grant funding of $5/student is available for up to 3,500 students across the state to help cover the costs of cooking/tasting activities that are part of the curriculum. Apply today for program materials and funding for the 2014-15 school year!

Power Panther Professionals

Power Panther Professionals is a 6 to 12-week customizable staff wellness program designed for school and childcare center personnel.  Its ultimate goal is to improve employees’ health and well-being while empowering them to serve as healthy role models for young people and other adults. The program provides a flexible framework from which a school can build and customize its own staff wellness program. Along with program materials, participating sites will receive $100 in sub-grant funding to help defray the costs for printing, food tastings to accompany nutrition education at meetings, and/or to implement enhancement activities. Choose from three program areas: My Plate Basics, Wellness Everyday, or Incorporating Nutrition Education and Physical Activity into Curriculum.

Eat Smart! Play Hard! Learn Better!

The USDA’s Team Nutrition is an integrated, behavior based, comprehensive plan for promoting the nutritional health of the nation’s children.  This plan involves schools, parents, and the community in efforts to continuously improve school meals, and to promote the health and education of 50 million school children in more than 96,000 schools nationwide. 

The goal of Team Nutrition is to improve children’s lifelong eating and physical activity habits through nutrition education based on the principles of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate.

Team Nutrition focuses on five specific behavior outcomes:

  1. Eat a variety of foods
  2. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  3. Eat lower fat foods more often
  4. Get your calcium-rich foods
  5. Be physically active

Kansas Team Nutrition is actively working to promote a number of health education programs to support schools’ wellness policy goals.   Currently, Kansas Team Nutrition supports Power Panther Pals, Power up!, Power Panther Professionals, Power Panther Preschool, Opens in new windowBody Venture, andFamily Fun, Food & Fitness Events.   In addition, Kansas Team Nutrition Schools have access to health education resources and personalized technical assistance from Registered Dietitians.

Kansas Team Nutrition is focused on continuing to support implementation of school wellness policy goals and academic achievement by nurturing healthier students and a healthy school environment.
