Family Fun, Food and Fitness Event

Kansas Team Nutrition is now accepting applications from schools and child care centers wanting to host a fall Family Fun, Food and Fitness event.  Team Nutrition staff plan to award a total of sixty $250 sub-grants to schools and child care centers who plan to host a fall Family Fun, Food and Fitness event. In addition to sub-grant funds, selected sites will receive a Family Fun, Food & Fitness Event Planning Guide to assist in their planning efforts. This guide provides instructions for planning and promoting a health-centered, family-friendly, school or child care sponsored event and includes specific instructions detailing both nutrition and fitness activities. Family Fun, Food and Fitness Spending Guidance


Discover MyPlate and Serving Up MyPlate - Nutrition Education Curriculum

NEW for School Year 2015 - 16. Kansas Team Nutrition, as part of a USDA Team Nutrition Training Grant, is offering program materials and sub-grant funds for Kansas schools to implement USDA’s Discover MyPlate and Serving Up MyPlate standards based nutrition education curriculum in classrooms reaching a total of 15,250 students in Kindergarten – 6th grade.  Lessons integrate nutrition education into Math, Science, English Language Arts, and Health.  Teachers can meet core education standards through these ready-to-go and interactive lessons. Selected schools will receive hard copies of the materials in addition to sub-grant funds in the amount of $5/student to conduct cooking/tasting activities.. Apply today! Power Panther Professionals

Applications are being accepted for Power Panther Professionals through August 31st. Apply for this 6 to 12 week customizable staff wellness program designed for school or child care center personnel.  Choose from three program offerings including MyPlate Basics, Wellness Everyday, and Incorporating Nutrition Education and Physical Activity into Curriculum. Sub-grant funding in the amount of $100 per participating school or child care center is available to assist in program implementation. Questions contact Jill Ladd at jladd@ksde.org or 785-296-2276.

Eat Smart! Play Hard! Learn Better!

The USDA’s Team Nutrition is an integrated, behavior based, comprehensive plan for promoting the nutritional health of the nation’s children.  This plan involves schools, parents, and the community in efforts to continuously improve school meals, and to promote the health and education of 50 million school children in more than 96,000 schools nationwide. 

The goal of Team Nutrition is to improve children’s lifelong eating and physical activity habits through nutrition education based on the principles of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate.

Team Nutrition focuses on five specific behavior outcomes:

  1. Eat a variety of foods
  2. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  3. Eat lower fat foods more often
  4. Get your calcium-rich foods
  5. Be physically active

Kansas Team Nutrition is actively working to promote a number of health education programs to support schools’ wellness policy goals.   Currently, Kansas Team Nutrition supports Power Panther Pals, Power up!, Power Panther Professionals, Power Panther Preschool, Opens in new windowBody Venture, and Family Fun, Food & Fitness Events.   In addition, Kansas Team Nutrition Schools have access to health education resources and personalized technical assistance from Registered Dietitians.

Kansas Team Nutrition is focused on continuing to support implementation of school wellness policy goals and academic achievement by nurturing healthier students and a healthy school environment.
